Mountain Cow killed in the Chiquibul

San Ignacio town, Cayo. Thursday, May 21, 2015. Friends for Conservation and Development today reported that poachers, suspected to be from across the border in Guatemala, have killed an adult Mountain Cow or Tapir.

The carcass of the adult male was found by park rangers on Friday and evidence shows that it was shot and killed well within Belizean territory inside the Chiquibul Forest Reserve.

According to Manager of the Chiquibul Park Derek Chan, FCD Rangers who were monitoring the nesting areas for the Scarlet Macaws came across the carcass of the Mountain Cow.

They suspect that the animal was shot and killed by Guatemalan poachers who are known to frequent the area.

It is not certain why this adult male Tapir was killed and Chan says there was no indication that the animal was hunted for its meat.
