Justin Williams wins 87th. annual Cross Country Cycling Classic
Belize City. Saturday, April 4, 2015. The 87 annual Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic was won by Justin Williams.
Williams bested a field of close to one hundred cyclists, finishing the one hundred and forty miles race along the George Price Highway in 5 hours 54 minutes and 39 seconds.
Scottie Weiss came in second and David Henderson finished third.
At the conclusion of the race, Williams expressed his pride and joy at winning the garland, telling reporters “I have so much pride right now. I am so happy.”
Williams admits that he had to control his emotion as he rode into Belize City and towards the finish line, hearing the crowd cheering for him.
Williams says that at times during the race, he wa hurting, but he kept motivating himself saying he had to do it for the country. “I am proud to be a Belizean,” he said.
The Holy Saturday Cycling Classic started just after 6 o’clock, headed to San Ignacio town and returned to Belize City, ending in front of BTL Park.
Williams says the victory was not a one-man effort and credits team work and the selflessness of his younger brother who made it possible for him to out-sprint Scottie Weiss at the finish line to win the title.
Congratulations to Justin Williams for winning the garland and all the riders for taking part in what is undoubtedly the biggest one-day sporting event in Belize.
