Man jailed for marijuana cultivation
A man from Isabella Bank village, Belize district was fined and confined after he pleaded guilty to charges of drug trafficking and cultivation of marijuana.
Owen Baptist, 42, entered the guilty plea on Friday in the Belize City Magistrate’s court.
The background to the story is that Ladyville police, acting upon information received, went to Baptist’s farm on Wednesday afternoon where they found 37 marijuana plants and 2.7 kilos or 6 pounds of dried marijuana.
After pleading guilty, Magistrate Leslie Hamilton sentenced Baptist to three years in prison and a fine of $10,000 for each count.
If Baptist defaults on paying the fines, he will spend an additional 3 years in jail. But since the sentences will run concurrently, he will only spend three years in jail, if he is unable to pay the fine.
