Man who was shot by GSU gives his side of the story
San Ignacio, CAYO. Thursday, February 25, 2016. A man from Bullet Tree Falls village in the Cayo district was wounded in a shooting incident last night.
Twenty eight year old Roberto Chan was shot in the shoulder, allegedly by a member of the Gang Suppression Unit, (GSU).
The official police version of the incident is that members of the GSU were conducting a vehicle check point on the Santa Rosa road last night, when a Toyota 4 Runner almost ran over a member of the GSU team.
Police say that was when the GSU fired shots at the vehicle.
Chan was injured to the right shoulder and was taken to the San Ignacio community hospital for medical treatment.
While that is the official police version of what happened, the Chan family is telling a completely different story. Today from his bed at the San Ignacio Community Hospital, Roberto Chan told TNC News that the police flat out lied about what happened.
Chan’s wife Ana Rivera was seated next to him holding the couple’s baby, while their other child was laying down on the back seat of the SUV. According to Ana Rivera there was no indication that the police was conducting a checkpoint in the area where the shooting happened.
According to Roberto Chan, the bullet is still lodged in his shoulder and he continues to be in considerable pain.
