Mother charged for the crime of child abandonment
Belize City resident Shannel Robinson, 25, has become an inmate of the Belize Central Prison after she was unable to meet bail offered when she appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Robinson was charged with two counts of child abandonment.
The charge stems from an incident on Thursday morning in which her two children, ages 3 and 4 years old narrowly escaped death when their apartment caught on fire.
The children had been left sleeping in the apartment while Robinson claims she went to run an errand.
Magistrate Leslie Hamilton offered Robinson bail in the amount of BZ$1,000; but she was unable to come up with the money and was remanded to prison until her next court appearance on October 8.
The two children, Shevaun and Skanika Reneau have been placed in the care of the Human Services Department.
