Mudslide kills dozens in Guatemala
San Ignacio town, CAYO. Saturday, October 3, 2015. Close to five dozen Guatemalans are dead following a massive landslide in a community on the outskirts of Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Rescue workers are frantically digging through mounds of earth and rubble to try and reach those still trapped by the mudslide, which happened on Thursday night in Santa Catarina Pinula.
Hundreds of people remain missing and unaccounted for.
Television reports from Guatemala show rescue workers, firemen and neighbors digging through the mud, some of them listening with their ear to the ground to listen for signs of life beneath.
Preliminary reports are that some homes may have been buried under as much as 50 feet of mud.
The last time that a tragedy of this magnitude hit Guatemala was in 2005 when heavy rainfall triggered another landslide, at that time in the remote village Panabaj.
Many of the bodies from that disaster were never recovered.
