New Attorney General takes up appointment
Belmopan, CAYO. Tuesday, January 3, 2017. Attorney-at-Law Michael Peyrifitte is the new Attorney General of Belize.
Peyrifitte took the oath of office today from Governor General Sir Colville Young during ceremonies at Belize House in Belmopan.
Attorney General Peyrifitte, who was accompanied to the swearing in by family and friends, takes over from Senator Vanessa Retreache who stepped down last December after serving at the Minister of Legal Affairs in the Barrow administration for a year.
The ascension of Peyrifitte to the post of Attorney General means that he has to vacate appointment as Speaker of the House of Representatives, a post he has held since 2012.
Late last year, government announced that Laura Longsworth has been tabbed to replace Peyrifitte as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Longsworth will be formally taking up her post at the next sitting of the Lower House of Parliament.
Likewise, Michael Peyrifitte will be sworn in as a Senator at the next sitting of the Upper House of Parliament where he will succeed Vanessa Retreage as one of the government Senators.
