San Ignacio, CAYO. Wednesday, January 31, 2018. The National Institute of Culture and History, NICH, this afternoon confirmed that Park Manager Luis Ramirez and Park Ranger Elroy Villanueva have been found.
The duo left their post at the Caracol archaeological site on Monday evening and when they did not return as expected, a search for them commenced.
On Tuesday afternoon , NICH sent out a press release announcing that they were officially listed as missing.
Twenty four hours late, a short statement from NICH this evening (Wednesday) announced that Ramirez and Villanueva who were reported missing in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve “have been found and will soon be reunited with their families.”
The NICH statement explains that Ramirez and Villanueva “became disoriented and lost their way on Monday night away from the [Caracol] archaeological site.”
They were located at 1:30 pm today through the combined efforts of the Belize Defence Force, the Belize Police Department and officials of the Forestry Department.
The two men were found 2.5 kilometers Northwest of the Caracol archaeological site and 4 kilometers East of the Belize/Guatemala border.
