Opposition members stage walkout of House meeting
Belmopan, Belize. Friday, June 26, 2015. The Speaker of the House of Representatives Michael Peyrefitte this morning ejected the Senator Patrick Jason Andrews from the gallery in the House of Representatives, allegedly for disrupting the proceedings during a presentation being made by the member for Collet, Patrick Faber.
The Honorable the Leader of the Opposition and Member for Freetown, Mr. Francis Fonseca, informed the House that if the Speaker proceeded with the removal of Senator Andrews from the gallery, that the Opposition members in the Lower House of Parliament would walk out.
The Speaker stuck to his decision and had the police escort Senator Andrews out of the gallery; but not before a brief interruption of the sitting of the House of Representatives amidst shouting by supporters of the PUP who were clearly not satisfied with the decision and supporters of the United Democratic Party who were seated in the opposite gallery.
The sitting of the House continued without the presence of the Opposition and Prime Minister Dean Barrow, commenting on their decision to walk out, described the PUP’s decision as “a gross dereliction of duty” especially since the amendment to the Petro Caribe Loan Act was one of the matters on the agenda for today’s sitting of the House of Representatives.
The PUP has been critical of the way the Petro Caribe Loan funds are being used by the government.
“We on this side of the House say shame,” said the Prime Minister in relation to the PUP walk out this morning.
