Osmany Salas accepts appointment as candidate for 13th Senator
Belize City, BELIZE. Wednesday, January 4, 2017. He is the consummate public servant and national President of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA).
Now, Osmany Salas is looking to take his contribution to national development to a whole new level.
Salas has confirmed that he has accepted a nomination for election as the 13th Senator representing the non-governmental organizations.
He was nominated by BTIA and the Scout Association of Belize.
“Public service has always been dear to my heart,” Salas told West Vision via social media.
He joins Janelle Chanona, Edilberto Romero, Pablo Collado, Donovan Reneau and Valdemar Andrade as nominees for the seat in the Upper House of Parliament.
“I am honored to be in the group of nominees. It is a group of competent and dedicated Belizeans,” Salas said.
The group of nominees will be vetted by the 13th Senator Steering Committee using the criteria that was established by the group of non-governmental organizations in good standing as of November 8, 2016.
Salas says that if he is successful in his bid to be chosen as the 13th Senator he will “bring an unbiased balance to the proceedings of the Senate and thereby make the Upper House of our National Assembly the final check and balance as it should be in our system of governance.”
But more than just taking a seat in the Senate, Salas says his appointment as the 13th Senator will give him a unique platform to carry on his public service.
“It will give me the opportunity to work at uniting and organizing the diverse NGO community,” Salas said.
Salas first served as BTIA President on a voluntary basis for the period of 2004-2006.
He was re-elected last December to serve again as National President of BTIA.
The election of the person to be the 13th Senator representing the non-governmental organizations will take place on Tuesday, January 10, 2017.
The name of the person who emerges with the most votes from next Tuesday’s election will be forwarded to Belize House for appointment to the Senate by Governor General, Sir Colville Young.
