Police asks motorist to beware of impersonators on the highways
Belmopan, CAYO. Tuesday, December 13, 2016. The Belize Police Department has issued a public advisory that is a chilling reminder of the times we now live in.
The advisory from the police asks the motoring public to be on the lookout for what has been described as “criminals impersonating police officers and setting up check points on our highways.”
Official (legal) police checkpoints, according to the public advisory will always include a Police Department Check Point sign; at least one officer dressed in Khaki shirt and blue pants; and a marked police vehicle present at the location of any official police check point.
“If any member of the public should come across a Police Check Point that does not meet these requirements, they are advised not to stop and proceed to the nearest police station to report the matter,” says the public advisory.
The police say the pubic advisory became necessary “in view of the recent robberies on our highways” and the aforementioned “criminals impersonating police officers.”
The police hotline is 911 and that number is set up to ring at the police station nearest to the location from which the emergency call is made.
