The Belize Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own. Detective Constable Dean Yearwood who was attached to the Crimes Investigations Branch at Precinct Two at the Racoon Street police station was shot and killed on Saturday night, allegedly by another police officer.

The shooting is reported to have happened on Central American Boulevard on Saturday night.

An official report of the incident has not yet been released by the police press officer Raphael Martinez; but information received by West Vision indicates that Detective Constable Yearwood, with regulation number 1341, had just gotten off work and was in front of a supermarket on Central American Boulevard when he was accosted by robbers.

Constable Yearwood, according to the information we received, produced his licensed firearm and fired warning shots which sent his attackers fleeing.

And while Detective Yearwood was able to diffuse the attack , another policeman who had just finished duties at the Carnival competition at the Rogers Stadium heard the shots and responded to the scene.

Upon arriving, that second police officer, who is stationed at Precinct One on Euphrates Avenue, reportedly saw Detective Yearwood with the gun in his hand.

The second officer, unaware that it was his colleague, reportedly fired a single gunshot , fatally wounding Detective Yearwood in the back.

The fallen police officer who was recently transferred from Belmopan to Belize City was a member of Recruit Squad Number 86 of 2010.

This is a very sad story. Condolences to the family of this young man. And prayers too for the other officer who now has to live with the fact that he killed one of his colleague, even if it was an accident.

Wow. How could he not recognize his own colleague? Then again, we do not know the full story, so let’s not jump to conclusion. This is one messed up situation. Condolences to the family of PC Yearwood.

Do not understand, he shot his co-worker in the back, so then how come he knew he had a gun, just because he heard gunshots, the unofficial report said he could see the person with a gun ( that mean he saw him from the front) , but yet shot him in the back. Well that’s the unofficial report. We will wait for the official one.
