Police officer recuperates after being shot in the line of duty

Belize City, BELIZE. Tuesday, March 1, 2016. A police officer stationed in Belize City in recuperating in the hospital after she was injured in a shooting incident last night.

Constable Sheneah Caliz, who is attached to Traffic Support at Precinct 3 in Belize City, sustained gunshot wounds to the head and left palm, when a gunman opened fire on a police mobile unit that drove up on what appeared to be a robbery in progress.

Authorities say that the incident happened around 7:50 pm on Monday on Albert Street in the vicinity of Scotia Bank.

The officers in the mobile unit say they saw a man with a rag covering his face in the process of searching another man who was on the pavement.

A third man, who was standing up beside the one who was searching the man on the ground, fired several shots at the police mobile as they arrived on the scene, hitting the vehicle’s windshield and injuring PC Caliz.

After the shooting, the gunman fled the scene, but was later apprehended and he himself needed medical attention as he suffered a cut to his foot while running away from police after the shooting.

Officer Commanding Eastern Division South Assistant Commissioner Chester Williams told reporters this morning that PC Caliz’ injuries are not life-threatening, explaining that the bullet to her head did not penetrate her skull.

A police reports issued this morning said that PC Caliz is in stable condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

Police have since arrested Jamal Jackson, the alleged gunman, pending charges.

Police are searching for a second person in connection with Monday night’s incident.
