Police say robbery suspect was killed in shootout with authorities
Police say a suspect in a robbery case in Ladyville village, Belize district was fatally wounded in an exchange of gunfire with the police on Wednesday afternoon.
Travis Akeem McKay, 22, died on the scene on Sea Gull Street in Ladyville.
According to the official police report, a man of Creole descent allegedly held up and robbed the proprietor of Belize Country Products situated at Mile 9 on the Phillip Goldson Highway.
The businessman told police that the robber wore a green mask, black sweater and long khaki pants and carried what appeared to be a handgun.
After grabbing money fron the drawer, the robber reportedly ran out of the building and crossed the Phillip Goldson Highway into an abandoned house.
Police say that officers from the Ladyville station responded to the robbery and managed to corner the suspect on Sea Gull Street.
Police say that the suspect, later identified as McKay, pulled a .38 revolver and fired three shots at the marked police mobile.
The official report says that police responded and as a result the suspect, McKay, was fatally wounded.
Police say that following the incident on Sea Gull Street they recovered from McKay’s body $153 in notes and coins and a .38 snub nose revolver containing 3 expended shells and 2 live rounds.
Police say they also recovered three 9 millimeter expended shells from inside the police mobile.
Police investigations continue.
