Policeman accidentally shoots himself in the leg in San Ignacio town
San Ignacio, CAYO. Tuesday, December 8, 2015. A police officer is recuperating in San Ignacio after accidentally shooting himself in the leg this morning.
The accidental discharging of his service revolver happened just before midday inside of the offices of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in San Ignacio town.
The bullet from the weapon grazed the officer’s leg, hit a wooden door and shattered on the cement wall of the office.
No one else was injured in the incident and the police officer was taken to the San Ignacio Community Hospital for treatment.
The injured policeman who is attached to the Tourism Police Unit, along with a couple of his colleagues, had gone to the NEMO office on routine patrol.
He was in the process of sitting down and removed the firearm from the holster.
A witness to the incident said he saw the officer remove the magazine from the firearm, but the officer was apparently unaware that a live round was left in the chamber.
Somehow the officer’s finger somehow came in contact with the trigger and the firearm discharged.
The Deputy Officer Commanding San Ignacio Police Inspector Reymundo Reyes has confirmed the incident and says that an investigation has been launched to determine exactly what transpired and if any disciplinary charges will be brought against the policeman.
