Policeman charged for allegedly beating up detainee
San Ignacio, CAYO. Monday, November 9, 2015. Police in San Ignacio have arrested and charged one of their own for allegedly beating up a man who was in detention.
Police Constable Kent Thompson, 26, was arrested and charged today for the crime of harm.
PC Thompson was arraigned before Magistrate Gillett in the San Ignacio Magistrate’s Court where he plead not guilty to the charge.
Magistrate Gillett offered PC Thompson bail in the amount of $800 and the case was adjourned until December 30, 2015.
The charge against PC Thompson arose out of an incident on the night of Monday, October 12, 2015.
A 33 year old San Ignacio man was detained at the San Ignacio police station due to a domestic incident.
The man claims that while he was in lock up at the cell block at the San Ignacio police station, a tall, dark police officer opened the door and started to beat him with a baton.
The man reported the incident and complained of pain all over his body. A statement was taken and he was taken to the hospital for a medical examination where the doctor classified his injuries as harm.
Officer Commanding San Ignacio Police Superintendent Andrew Ramirez explains that in the wake of the allegations made, statements were recorded and a review of the station’s surveillance video was done, which all led to the arrest and charging of PC Thompson.
Superintendent Ramirez says that a recommendation will be made to the Commissioner of Police to place PC Thompson on interdiction while he is on trial.
PC Thompson also faces internal disciplinary action by the Police Department.
