Prime Minister asks for Junior Minister’s resignation
Prime Minister Dean Barrow had fired the junior minister of Immigration Elvin Penner.
A statement from the office of the prime minister said that on Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Barrow met with Penner, a two-term representative for Cayo Northeast and “required him to resign.”
The official statement did not go into specifics, but did say that the sacking of Penner from Cabinet was because Penner “did not discharge his responsibilities with either the due judgment and balance, or the scrupulous regard for appearances, which the Prime Minister demands for all his Ministers.”
The government statement says that Penner “agreed with the position of the Prime Minster” and tendered the requested resignation with was accepted immediately.
Penner remains a member of the House of Representative.
In the same statement announcing Penner’s firing, it was announced that a joint investigation has been launched by the Ministries of Immigration and the Public Service.
The investigation, according to the official statement surrounds the circumstances surrounding the issue of a Belize passport which was issued to a South Korean national.
The results of that official investigation are expected in the next 24 to 48 hours and a public statement of those results is expected.
