Prisoner escapes, another shot during recapture
Hattieville village, BELIZE. Wednesday, December 2, 2015. A prisoner that was being transported to the Belize Central Prison has escaped.
Laurence Bernardez was one of three prisoners that were being transported from Dangriga to the Hattieville facility by police in an open pan pickup truck on Tuesday afternoon when the escaped occurred.
The official version of what transpired was that Bernardez, Eden Gusman and Daniel McKenzie were properly handcuffed to each other and placed in the back of the truck.
The police say when they arrived in Hattieville village, the vehicle transporting the prisoners slowed down at a pedestrian crossing about 50 yards from the Hattieville Police Station.
That was when two of the prisoners, namely Eden Guzman and Laurence Bernardez bolted for freedom.
Police say officers immediately set chase after the fleeing prisoners who ran into nearby bushes.
The officers soon caught up with Eden Guzman, but during a struggle to subdue him, one of the policemen shot Guzman in the leg in order to restrain him.
Bernardez could not be located and remains on the run.
Guzman was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital to receive treatment for his gunshot injury.
Police investigations continue.
