PUP leader calls for repeal of Petro Caribe Loans Act

Belize City. Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Leader of the Opposition People’s United Party, Francis Fonseca, today called for a repeal of the controversial Petro Caribe Loans Act.

Speaking with reporters in Belize City, Mr. Fonseca said that “this law is bad for Belize” and therefore should be repealed.

Mr. Fonseca  says that a letter has been drafter and the objective is to have civil society partners, inclusive of third parties if they so desire, to become signatories to the letter calling for a repeal of the recently enacted Petro Caribe Loans Act.

Mr. Fonseca sas that is the Act is not repealed within 21 days of that letter being sent to the Prime Minister, “then we will have to mobilize and take to the streets and get the support of the Belizean people on this issue.”

The PUP leader says that the Petro Caribe Loans Act “is a betrayal of the very people who marched along with the United Democratic Party in 2005 for a Finance and Audit Act.”

But even before the drafted letter is sent, Prime Minister Dean Barrow, just back from meetings in Miami, Florida had a resounding NO to the call for a repeal of the Petro Caribe Loans Act.

“There is not a chance in hell that there will be a repeal of the Petro Caribe Loans Act,” said PM Barrow.

Mr. Barrow went on to explain that his government is emboldened by the results of the January bye-election in Cayo North and the March Municipal Elections, which the Prime Minister says constituted a kind of referendum on the Petro Caribe issue.
