PUP wants impartial investigation of passport scandal at Immigration Department
The opposition People’s United party (PUP) today said it stands ready to pursue the possibility of engaging the recall mechanism with the Honorable the member for Cayo Northeast Mr. Elvin Penner being the target.
A press release from the PUP issued this morning, the Western Caucus of the party said it “condemns the disgraceful and illegal actions of Hon Elvin Penner, which resulted in his removal from Cabinet.”
The release goes on to say that the Western Caucus demands “an impartial criminal investigation be carried out against Mr. Penner and the other UDP officials allegedly named in this international scandal including those in the Nationality Section.”
The PUP believes that “it is not enough that Mr. Penner is sacked from Cabinet and slightly slapped on the wrist …” and that furthermore “the public demands that the minister responsible for immigration, Hon. Godwin Hulse be ultimately held accountable and stripped of his ministerial status.”
The PUP statement says that “this blatant disregard for the sanctity of our Belizean Passport and Nationality further demonstrates this UDP government’s inability to preserve and protect the Belizean people.”
The PUP wants “a house-cleaning exercise” to be carried out at the Immigration Department “in order to restore confidence…”
It ends by saying that “the public will not accept if only low-level public officers are made scapegoats, and the criminal behavior of high-ranking UDP officials are covered up.”
The PUP Western Caucus says that it will remain vigilant of the ongoing investigation and stand ready to pursue the possibility of engaging the Recall Mechanism.
