Salvadoran authorities seize cocaine reportedly destined for Belize
Law enforcement officials in El Salvador last week seized multiple containers chock full of cocaine that were supposed to be destined for Belize.
According to an Associated Press report, El Salvador’s attorney general has confirmed that the cocaine was found hidden in more than 160 containers of frozen pineapple juice.
The accompanying picture released by El Salvador’s national Civil Police, shows members of the anti narcotics division inspecting containers in which more than 400 kilos of cocaine were found hidden in frozen pineapple juice containers.
The estimated cost of the confiscated shipment of cocaine has been put at US$10 million.
According to Salvadoran authorities, a truck carrying the shipment originated in Panama, but they did not say where or to who in Belize the shipment was destined.
The discovery of the cocaine hidden in the frozen juice containers happened at an undisclosed checkpoint and the vehicle was escorted to the local customs compound in the municipality of Llopango east of the capital San Salvador.
The driver of the refrigerated truck, Nicaraguan national Juan Jose Matamoros Giron, 26, has since been arrested.
