San Pedro bartender on life support in Belize City
San Pedro Town, AMBERGRIS CAYE. Sunday, March 6, 2016. The family of 30 year old Edwin Ixpatac is staying by his bedside at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital as he remains in critical condition.
Best information suggests that Ixpatac, a resident of San Pedro town, was seen swimming in the Caribbean Sea late on Thursday night and a concerned citizen called the San Pedro police for assistance.
It is not certain what transpired, but sometime between getting Ixpatac out of the Sea and on to the beach, he became unresponsive and friends that he was injured while being taken out of the sea and also beaten while he was in custody at the San Pedro police station.
Unconfirmed reports are that Ixpatac may have been under the influence of alcohol when he ventured into the Caribbean Sea and also may have struggled with police officers while he was being taken out of the water and might have somehow hit his head on a golf cart.
The injured Ixpatac was taken first to the San Pedro Poly Clinic on Friday and was later transferred to the KHMH in Belize City where he is on life support.
Ixpatax has been employed at the Holiday Hotel for the last couple of months.
Police have been tight-lipped about the incident but we understand that at least two officers whose name cannot be revealed at this time, are being questioned as part of an internal investigation into the incident that left Edwin Ixpatac hospitalized and fighting for his life.
