Scot Stirm offers apology; but stands by his beliefs
San Ignacio, CAYO. Wednesday, March 30, 2016. About an hour after the National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB) sent out a statement rejecting a demand for an apology from Pastor Scot Stirm for comments he made about the Garifuna cultural practices, the embattled pastor sent out a press release of his own.
In his release, Stirm, while holding fast to his evangelical beliefs, offered an apology “for any offense caused by any of my words.”
In his release, Pastor Stirm made bullet-point references to topics he raised in the video, explaining what his intended reference to each meant.
But regarding the issue of the Garinagu, Pastor Stirm says that all he was doing was relating a Christian Gairfuna friend’s story, that it was her story and not his.
The evangelical pastor writes in his release that while he has been counseled to stand his ground, meaning, not to apologize, he has decided to go against that advice.
Stirm’s statement says, “if I were to stand upon the platform of ‘religious freedoms,’ I would have every right to ‘stand my ground’ concerning statements rooted in religious convictions, as with all religious convictions and freedoms in a democracy.”
He went on to say that “in my compassion and love for my dear Garifuna brothers & sisters, I willingly waive that right in order to humbly apologize for any offense caused by any of my words – my heart was not at all to offend, and for that, I do sincerely apologize.”
Pastor Stirm says that he will continue to pray for his dear Garifuna brothers & sisters, and the rest of the nation of Belize, that Belize could fulfill it’s God-given eternal destiny.
