Strong earthquake shakes southern Taiwan
San Ignacio, CAYO. Friday, February 5, 2016. TNC: Multiple fatalities have been recorded and the death toll may rise further after a strong earthquake shook the city of Tainan, in the southern part of the Republic of China, Taiwan on Saturday morning (local time).
Media reports say that the magnitude 6.4 earthquake toppled buildings, one of which was a 17-storey structure that trapped many people.
Rescuers responded quickly to the scene of the collapsed buildings and reports say more than 120 survivors were carried to safety and about two dozen others taken to hospital, most of them with minor injuries.
Smaller aftershocks measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale shook Tainan about thirty minutes after the initial earthquake.
The local government in Tainan has opened what is described as a level one emergency response center to deal with the aftermath of the earthquake.
