Punta Gorda, TOLEDO. Saturday, February 20, 2016. The Punta Gorda-based Toledo Institute for Development and Environment, TIDE, has facilitated the relocation of a crocodile from a residential area in that southern municipality.

According to a posting on its website, TIDE has been monitoring reports of crocodiles in creeks in the Indianville area of Punta Gorda town has been working with residents to relocate the reptiles.

TIDE reports that the first relocation was carried out on Monday, February 15, after a group of men from Indianville captured one of the crocodiles and handed it over to TIDE.

“We appreciate their decision to turn the crocodile in to us,: said TIDE in its web posting, confirming that “later that same day we released it in its natural habitat in the Rio Grande.”

The actions of the men who caught the crocodile in the creek in the Indianville area of Punta Gorda town is being commended by TIDE, especially since the capture of the crocodile could have resulted in injury either to the reptile or the men themselves.

“We urge anyone else who comes across a crocodile to call us immediately with the location, rather than attempt to catch it,” says TIDE as the organization looks forward to working with residents to safely relocate the other crocodiles in the Indianville area of town.

As for how the crocodiles got to the creeks in the Indianville area, TIDE officials are not sure, but suggest that the reptiles may have ended up in Punta Gorda due to flooding.

TIDE’s advisory to residents of Punta Gorda asks that they avoid feeding the crocodiles or trying to capture them and to call either the Forest Department, ACES or TIDE so that trained personnel can come in to help.
