Tire falls off trailer, damages vehicles on George Price Highway
Five people escaped serious injury when a tire which was allegedly not properly secured on a trailer fell off and crashed into two vehicles.
The incident happened around 7 pm on Friday between miles 6 and 7 on the George Price Highway.
According to reports, the first vehicle that the tire hit was a Toyota Highlander being driven by a woman who was being accompanied by her 12 year old daughter.
The run-away tire also clammed into a Hilux pickup which was carrying Mexican diplomats. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage.
The truck that was hauling the trailer did not stop and simply kept doing towards Belize City.
One person in one of the vehicles that was hit says they tried calling the police 911 emergency number more than ten times but could not get through.
By the time a police mobile arrived at the scene 19 minutes after the incident, the truck was long gone and the affected motorist says the police lost a crucial opportunity to have been able to stop the truck at the mile 4 checkpoint.
One of the persons whose vehicle was smashed by the falling tire says that at first she was not sure what it was that hit her vehicle. “I just say a huge black object falling on top of me,” the woman said.
