Punta Gorda town, Toledo. Monday, August 3, 2015. A 19 year old Toledo man is hospitalized in Belize City after he was shot in the hand and leg by the police during an attempt to subdue him this past weekend.

Police say they had to use force against Byron Paiz after he aggressed officers with a machete on Saturday night in Forest Home village.

Authorities responded to reports of a domestic dispute in the village and when they arrived at the residence on Wilson Road in Forest Home village, Paiz reportedly advanced on the officers with a machete.

A statement from the police press officer says that “in an effort to protect life, the police officer then fired a single shot at Paiz hitting him on his right hand in order to subdue him.”

But that shot did not stop Paiz, who again retrieved the machete that had been taken away from him by his girlfriend.

That was when a second shot was fired by the police, this time hitting Paiz in the right leg.

Only then were authorities able to subdue and disarm him.

Paiz was taken first to the Punta Gorda hospital, then transferred to the Southern Regional and later to the Karl Heusner Memorial in Belize City.

Byron Paiz, according to police, is hospitalized in stable condition.

Investigations continue.
