Tropical disturbance brings flood potential to parts of Belize
Punta Gorda, TOLEDO. Friday, May 29, 2020. The Belize Weather Bureau has issued a flood watch for parts of the country, advising residents in flood-prone areas to be on alert this weekend.
The flood watch states: “a tropical disturbance will support heavy rains over Central America this weekend, into next week, with the possibility of flooding over some parts of the country, especially low-lying and southern areas.”
The tropical disturbance referred to by the Belize Weather Bureau is located a couple hundred miles south of the coast of Central America in the Eastern north Pacific Ocean and moving toward the north, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center, NHC.
The broad area of low pressure is expected to move inland over Central America or southern Mexico this weekend, going into early next week and bring with it heavy rainfall over the region.
According to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center “these rains could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in areas of mountainous terrain.”
The updated NHC advisory issued this evening notes that “shower and thunderstorm activity is becoming better organized” and that “environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development and a tropical depression could form this weekend before the system moves northward and inland over Central America or southern Mexico.”
