Tropical Storm Erika devastates Dominica
San Ignacio town, Cayo. Friday, August 28, 2015. The Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit has been posting pictures of the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Erika which hit the island nation on Thursday.
The Caribbean News Agency, CANA, reports that Prime Minister Skeritt says Petite Savanne is the worst hit part of Dominica and that as many as 20 people may have lost their lives in the storm.
In his social media post, PM Skerritt published a photograph of the Douglas-Charles Airport showing debris on the runway.
He reported that at least one airplane was damaged.
According to PM Skerrit “tremendous work will be required to restore it to usefulness.”
At 10 am today, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that the center of Tropical Storm Erika was south of the eastern Dominican Republic.
The storm is carrying maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour and its present movement is to the west-northwest at 18 miles per hour.
