San Ignacio, CAYO. Thursday, May 2, 2019. The National Association of Village Councils today issued a statement on the impending national referendum on taking Guatemala’s unfounded claim to Belize to the International Court of Justice, ICJ for final resolution.

NAVCO is encouraging Belizeans to vote “YES” in the ICj Referendum on Wednesday, May 6, 2019.

In the statement, NAVCO prefaced its “YES” decision by saying to its constituents that the ICJ Referendum education campaign over the last two years “has been as thorough and objective as is
humanly possible.”

The NAVCO statement goes on to say that it is “convinced we have an unassailable legal case for the validation and confirmation by the world’s highest court. We believe it is in the nation’s best interest to seize this opportunity now to bring finality to the longstanding unfounded Guatemalan claim by voting yes to the ICJ.”

NAVCO encourages all Belizeans to “continue seeking and searching for whatever additional and relevant information they can find between now and the scheduled date of the referendum.”

The NAVCO statement concludes that Belizeans who have registered to vote on May 8 should “exercise their democratic right and civic duty to cast their ballot on referendum day, whatever their conviction or decision on the matter.”

The organization is also calling on all Belizeans to vote “in a spirit of mutual respect and national unity, regardless of our differences.”

“We call on all Belizeans to accept whatever is the outcome of the referendum, in the understanding that we will all have to live with that democratic collective decision as we continue to pursue our national goals and aspirations,” the NAVCO release says.
