Ya’axche Conservation Trust recognizes Farmers of the Year

Indian Creek village, Toledo. Monday, August 31, 2015. The Ya’axche Conservation Trust held its third annual Farmer of the Year Award on Sunday in Indian Creek village in the Toledo district.

The event brought together people from surrounding communities to share in the celebration of farmers who have been implementing best agriculture practice at their farms.

Cristina Garcia is the executive director of the Ya’axche Conservation Trust.

After a day of activities including booth displays by partner organizations, the 2015 Farmers of the Year were announced.

Taking the top prize this year was Martin Chiquin from Indian Creek village who explained that winning the Farmer of the Year award was a collaborative effort involving his entire family.

According to Director of Marketing for Ya’axche Conservation Trust Maximiliano Caal, the goal is to share the best agriculture practices with other farmers around the country.

The Ya’axche Conservation Trust is hoping that in 2016, the Farmer of the Year initiative will expand to include more farmers, particularly women.
